I know you're all excited about what you might do with Facebook and other social media. But hold your horses. We need to get a few things straight about doing well in those worlds. Here are some good tips from Social Times, at Why You Need To Stop Talking And Start Listening:
- Become genuinely interested in other people.
- Remember that a man's Name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
- Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
- Talk in the terms of the other man's interest.
- Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.
Funny thing, this may be good advice for how to behave in social media, but it's how you should behave everywhere else too. Including real life.
Give it a try.

I manage a Facebook Fan page for a non-profit Christian radio station. I also follow other similar fan pages. One thing that I've noticed about non-profit fan pages (radio and otherwise) is the constant desire to talk about what the organization is doing.
Being in radio - it's probably easier to find topics to get our "fans" talking about, but it's a constant focus for us. Even as we head into fund raiser season, we want our Facebook presence to engage our listeners and get them to talk about themselves. I don't know that we've gained donors from this yet, but we did recruit an awesome volunteer who gives us 6 hours a week.
