Donors are the best people

Treating your donors well is good business for a nonprofit. But here's another reason to treat these special people with a certain level of respect: They are highly virtuous people. The Salt of the Earth. Here are some facts the 2002 General Social Survey (a massive research project that's conducted through the University of Chicago every year or two since 1972) turned up on donors -- defined as people who give at to charity least once each year. Donors are:

  • 15% more likely than nondonors to give directions to a stranger.
  • 17% more likely to give up their place in line.
  • 22% more likely to give up a seat on the bus.
  • 46% more likely to give food or money to a homeless person.
  • 125% more likely to give blood.

Donors not only make the mission of your nonprofit possible, they are a large part of what makes society as a whole work. They deserve the best treatment you have to offer!

If you're serious about raising money from donors, you need to get serious about donors. More than ever before, donors are insisting that you share power with them, not treating them like passive ATMs. This blog is about the ways you can do that -- and the rewards that await you and your donors when you do.

Jeff Brooks, creative director at Merkle, has been serving the nonprofit community for nearly 20 years. He wants to be a curmudgeon when he grows up, and considers blogging great training. You can reach him at
