Sigh. Scandals can happen anywhere. But nonprofit scandals do wide-ranging damage. Even more than other transactions, charitable giving relies on trust. Bad actions by even a few of us creates a barrier to giving for all of us as donors stop and ask: Will they abuse my trust again?
These two scandals are especially troubling, because they are connected to larger news stories (the Abramoff mess and Hurricane Katrina), so they get a lot of notice:
Don't let it happen to you! If there's even the slightest hint of someone abusing trust, come down hard. It's the only way.
Thanks to Trent Stamp's Take for good coverage of bad nonprofits.

Nonprofit scandals are an almost daily ocurrence. I have been following nonprofit malfeasance for years @www.garyrsnyder.com and have have a monthly e-newsletter. The problem is a $18-40 Billion problem annually.

Great blog!
I have been investigating the Shriners for nearly a year and a half. What I have found is a disregard for no profit accuracy, disclosure and accountability as well as failure to file accurate tax returns.
My investigative series is at:
