From the DMA Nonprofit Federation conference in Washington
This morning's speaker was Timothy T. Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics, who reminded us of our impact not just on the causes we support, but on our donors: "We invite people to discover their best selves."
Don't forget that. No matter what your mission -- you have another mission: your donors. By encouraging them to care, to give, to get involved, you help them reach their high human potential. We assist their transformation into better, more evolved people. The positive impact that has on the world is beyond calculation -- maybe even more powerful than our combined missions and good deeds.
As yesterday's "altercation" shows, our missions are not all in alignment. Some of us are working hard to undo the work of others of us. But not in our work with donors. That goes on, no matter what else happens. Every day, donors are being transfigured by the act of writing checks. And that is changing the world.
Keep up the good work. Both kinds.
