This is so funny because it's absolutely true.

Please don't use "nonprofit" to stand in for obsolete or ineffective. Yes, there are many nonprofits that fit that description, but there are many businesses and government agencies that do as well.

I know it was meant in jest, but just as you stand up for what donors represent, so you should stand up for what the best nonprofits do.

End of sermon. I am a critic of specific nonprofit missteps, but a booster of the sector as a whole. Nonprofits are worth serious consideration because they are a serious industry producing for the society in critical ways.

By the way, I don't expect I would be happy if you titled your post "The government Google" either.

To the above poster,

You're a boring person with no sense of humor.

Sincerely,
The below poster

It's not funny.

While this may have been true for 1975, this is an antiquated look at how nonprofits run.

In the past 10 years alone more than 200 gradute schools have created programs focusing on nonprofit organizations - finally professionalizing the field.

If you had typed if the governmentment ran google...

Does the creator work at a nonprofit?

Lighten up - it is funny.

hahaha! i like your nonprofit google. but here's something you might like. have you heard of goodsearch.com? it's a new search engine that gives half of its revenue to charity. each time you search, the charity of your choice earns about one penny. while it's not much, i'm sure it adds up quickly as much time as we all spend online. and it's a way to give back by doing what we'd be doing anyway. i think it's a really cool idea. and it at least doesn't look like the nonprofit google :)

If you're serious about raising money from donors, you need to get serious about donors. More than ever before, donors are insisting that you share power with them, not treating them like passive ATMs. This blog is about the ways you can do that -- and the rewards that await you and your donors when you do.

Jeff Brooks, creative director at Merkle, has been serving the nonprofit community for nearly 20 years. He wants to be a curmudgeon when he grows up, and considers blogging great training. You can reach him at

A great partner for the nonprofit that wants to get donor-powered and grow revenue like crazy!
